AFL Betting

AFL Betting

The Australian Football League (AFL) is the premier, national Australian Rules football competition in the world. Consisting of 16 teams based across the breadth of Australia, it is the most popular sports competition in Australia when measured by average domestic sport attendances. The AFL is the most attended sporting league in Australia and is currently the fourth-most attended professional sports league in the world in terms of attendance per match.

Win Bet

A win bet is simply betting on one team to beat the other team in an event. Because it is only a two horse race, you’ll need to risk a bit of money on win bets, but they are the best bets to start your gambling experience with. There are more complex ways to gamble and get involved in the sport, which will be explained later.

Hawthorn $1.70
Geelong $2.00

The Line

In one sided contests, betting on the line can add more excitement to your viewing experience. When you bet on the line, you need to choose whether or not the team will win by a certain amount of points. If a team is favourite by -12.5 then you need to choose whether or not that team will win by 13 points. If you think they will, you’d choose that team, in the example below Hawthorn. If you think they won’t, then you’d choose the other team known as the underdog (Geelong).

Hawthorn (-12.5) $1.85
Geelong (+12.5) $1.85

Over/ Under Points

In the AFL you can bet on the total points scored in the game by choosing under or over a predetermined amount. This amount is set by the bookmaker, and can vary depending on the two teams in that particular contest. A typical point total for a game of football is 180 points, so you need to choose whether the game will have a total of 180 points or less. Based on your decision you’d bet on the score to go over or under that total.

Over 180.5 points $1.85
Under 180.5 points $1.85

The Margin

Similar to betting on the line, when you bet on the margin, you have to choose how many points you believe the winning team will win by. In every game there are four options, and depending on the strength of the favourite, you can get a various array of options. In the case below, as Hawthorn are a slight favourite to win, the odds are strongest for them to win by Under 39.5 points.

Hawthorn Under 39.5 $2.25
Geelong Under 39.5 $2.60
Hawthorn Over 39.5 $5.50
Geelong Over 39.5 $8.00

Other Types of AFL betting that can add excitement to your afternoon or evening, but are highly risky in terms of profit include:
- Total Goals in the match
- Most Disposals by a player
- Leading Goalkicker
- First Goalkicker
- First Score of the match

Whichever way you choose to bet, football can provide competitive odds and a fantastic spectacle. It clearly is a growing marketplace, and is ever expanding, providing more options every week to win, even if your team loses.
