Tennis Betting

TENNIS BET TYPES

There are many ways to bet on tennis. For the purposes of the more traditional types of tennis betting that we will examine first, all that truly matters is who wins and who loses. On that criteria alone, there is a vast number of options to explore when betting on the sport.

Before going into detail about each type of bet, it is important to understand that with all tennis betting there are many different factors that can influence a betting line. These factors are considered by the bookmakers and should be considered by anyone hoping to consistently win at betting on the sport of tennis. How players match up historically, how they have performed individually on the variety of surfaces the game is played on, recent injuries or performance issues are all factors that should be considered when calculating your odds of winning any tennis bet

Match Betting

There are two types of wager in tennis betting that are the most popular. One of them is betting on individual matchups. If you want to bet on an individual tennis match, the line for this type of bet is largely determined by the player ranking system, barring other considerations. For example, let’s say you have Roger Federer in a match against a player ranked at say 93rd in the world. It is extremely reasonable to assume that Roger Federer will win this match. Certainly the odds will be overwhelmingly in his favour.

R. Federer $1.08
A. Clement $8.00

Handicap betting

There are also a number of handicap bets that can be found. For example you could bet on a player in a match to win or lose at either +1.5 or -1.5 sets. Additionally, you could bet the same match at +9.5 games or -9.5 games. The same that is true of “set betting” can be said of handicap betting in tennis.

Games

R. Federer (-9.5) $1.85
A. Clement (+9.5) $1.85

Sets

R.Federer (-1.5) $1.85
A.Clement (+1.5) $1.85

Set Betting

As the name implies, you bet on the outcome of a single match on the criteria of the set spread of the final score and win if your bet is correct. For example, you can lay odds, and reasonably so, that the final score of our example match above might be Federer 3-0. If that is indeed the final score, you win.

Federer (3-0) $1.75
Federer (3-1) $5.50
Federer (3-2) $7.00
Clement (3-0) $101.00
Clement (3-1) $9.50
Clement (3-2) $9.50

Futures Betting

Another of the most popular wagers in tennis is “futures betting” or betting on the winner of a full event. The majority of this type of bet are placed during the Grand Slam events; the Australian, U.S. and French Opens, and Wimbledon. But since there are a large number of smaller events throughout a tennis season, there are ample opportunities to make this type of wager year-round.

Several additional variations of the “bet to win” model are also available. A “field bet” is one of those options, where you can pit the favourite for the event against the rest of the field in the event.

R. Federer $3.00
Field $1.30

Another more lucrative variation of betting futures, is to bet on the four Grand Slam events. This can be a nice bet mainly because if you pick a player well ahead of the event and they happen to get hot just prior to the event you are betting on, you do not suffer the inevitable shift in the odds hurting your potential winning percentage.

Regardless of how you want to approach tennis betting, it’s probably a good idea to familiarize yourself intimately with the sport and the major players if you have not already done so before you enter the arena of tennis betting.
